After studying 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' in Grade 11, this book review is very interesting as it discusses themes such as alienation and identity. Changez can be seen as a character, who is yet in search of his identity. His feelings for America and his involvement in Underwood Samson reflects his sense of belonging and attatchment for Western traditions. Juxtaposed with the feeling of being attached to America, he also holds on to his ‘Pakistani’ identity. The fact that he refuses to shave off his beard is a symbol of his Pakistani roots and upbringing. The ‘quest of a perfect cup of tea’ is significant in portraying how an individual is in search of their identity and personality. This video has really helped me build up my interest and knowledge of a novel I am really fond of.
