The documentary helped me in understanding the crucial role which ‘masks’ play in a Greek tragedy and even other plays – in earlier and modern time. In the case of Medea, the usage of masks has been augmented, as the lead role is of a mother who kills her own children. It made me question, if the mask helped the character to be more honest than if it was left bare? Though the action goes against the conformist notion of a mother, it also brings to focus the strong character of Medea. She is no ordinary woman and even uses language which was expected to be used by a man. Edith Hall also speaks about the importance of the translation to help the audience connect with the characters on a spiritual level; this creates a platform for the audience to effectively understand the characters in the play.
